Hollowroot Expedition
★★★★★ 4.7
Hollowroot Expedition is a quiet, atmospheric adventure. You wander an overgrown ruin, solve environmental puzzles, and piece together what happened through scattered notes and carvings. There's no combat to speak of — the pull is curiosity.
It's a swipe-and-tap game that works beautifully one-handed. The pacing is gentle, so it's ideal for shorter sessions, and the autosave means you can put it down mid-puzzle without worry. The soundscape is lovely with headphones.
Because the scenes are hand-painted and fairly static, it's one of the kindest games to your battery that we've tested lately. I played nearly an hour on a long train ride and barely dented the charge. If you like slow, thoughtful games, this one's a treat.
